On Monday, July 3rd, the Official Dedication for the Flag Pole and Flag donated to the Town of Barnstable was held at Dowses Beach in Osterville.  The Flag Pole and Installation were gifted by the Osterville Rotary Club and the Flag, from Peter Ders, was flown over the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. in honor of James T. Walsh, member of Congress.

Recreation Director Patti Machado served as emcee.  It was very moving to see patrons on the beach and in the water stand at attention while Dowses Beach Supervisor Jennifer Hudock raised the flag, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited and the National Anthem was sung by Lifeguard Colleen Ellis. Town Councilor Fred Chirigotis offered thanks from the Town of Barnstable to all who were involved. Recreation Commission Vice Chair Joe O’Brien attended the event.

A year ago July 1st, the Dowses Beach flag pole was struck by lightning and was declared a total loss.  Rebecca Richardson from the Osterville Rotary Club worked with the Club to fund a replacement flag pole. Our thanks go to the Osterville Rotary Club and Mr. Ders for their contributions.
